Arthur R. Gorrell

Dies with His Friends Around Him

With several of his friends around him, at the close of the day, Sunday, October 22, Arthur R. Gorrell died with scarcely a pain or struggle.

He had dined shortly after noon with his parents and sister, Mrs. J. W. Hunter, and husband, at his parental home on East Main Street; and then had gone to his rooms in the Gorrell block.

Ever since he had fitted up his rooms which were very pleasant with couch, and comfortable lounging chairs, they had been open night and day to his friends. He loved to have them come and they were always welcome whether he was there or not.

About 4 o’clock that afternoon Deputy Clerk Harvey Gribben left the court house and on his way home stopped at the rooms. Art was alone when he went in, but before long Bud Maytag and Dump Wormhoudt, Charles Hunter and Dick Clark dropped in, one by one.

Two hours later while Bud, Harvey and Dick were still there Art spit up a small amount of blood and said to his friends “I’m scared you’d better get Doctor Boyd.”

Not succeeding in getting him over the phone Bud Maytag went to his office and when in a few minutes Art had another hemorrhage Mr. Gribbon called another physician. Before either doctor arrived Art said “I believe I’m going to faint and as one of his friends placed his hand on his forehead he fell back and by the time the doctors and his own people had come to the office he was gone.

Arthur R. Gorrell was born in this city to Dr. and Mrs. J. R. Gorrell forty-four years ago the first day of last June. He completed the Newton High school course with the class of ’87. He was a student at the state university and graduated from the law department at the Northwestern University and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Greek fraternity.

He was the only son in the home and Mrs. Carrie Gorrell Hunter is his only sister. He had been in poor health the past two years and several times in conversation with her, he had talked as tho he expected the end was not far away; but even tho they noticed the change in him, the parents and sister did not give the matter real serious thought. Now they think of many things which had they seen them then, as they do now, would have made them better prepared for the sad ending of the life which has been bound so closely with theirs all these years.

The only other member of the immediate family is his nephew, Donald Hunter. He had been in Ames for a week end visit and the sad news reached him over the wire last evening when he was in Des Moines on his way home. ~ Newspaper unknown.
