Newton Resident Dies Yesterday
Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Elliott Will be Held Tomorrow Morning
Mrs. Mary Elliott, a well known Newton resident for the last 43 years, died yesterday morning at 3:35 o’clock at her home in Newton, 433 North Second avenue West. She was 86 years old and the cause of her death is thought to be hardening of the arteries.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock at the Baptist church in charge of Rev. P. H. Peterson, pastor of the church. Burial will be made in Newton Union cemetery beside her husband, James Elliott and her mother, Mrs. Frances Ross.
Mary Ross was born March 14, 1841 in Warren county, Ohio, and came to Iowa from Jefferson, Wis., in 1883 after her marriage to James Elliott in 1863 at Pendleton, Ind. They settled first at Valisca, Ia., where they lived for a few months, later moving to Newton in 1884, where they had made their home ever since. Mr. Elliott, who preceded his wife in death 23 years ago, was manager and owner of a blacksmith shop which stood on the ground now occupied by the M. Gralnek junk office.
Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Baptist church and was active in the church work as long has her health which had been failing for the last three or four years, permitted.
Mrs. Elliott was one of the few war widows of Newton, having been married just before her husband joined the Union army in the Civil war.
She is survived by one brother, Samuel Ross, of Saratoga, Wyo., who just returned to his home Friday, and one son, W. J. Elliott, of Newton. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Ellis J. and Clerman J. Elliott of Newton and a number of nieces and nephews.
