Mrs. Zilpha Vanatta

The funeral of Mrs. Zilpha Vanatta was held at the M. E. Church of Reasnor, on Tuesday morning of last week, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Frank Seeds. There was a large attendance of the friends of this splendid woman, who was dearly loved by all who knew her, and whose love was attested by many beautiful floral offerings. After the services, the remains were taken to the Wittemberg Cemetery for interment.

Mrs. Vanatta’s maiden name was Zilpha Graham. She was born September 8, 1857, in Cedar County, this state, and came to Jasper County in 1866, where her life since has been spent. In January, 1879, she was united in marriage with Richard Vanatta. Her death occurred at the home of her daughter, on Saturday morning, December 31, 1910. Mrs. Vanatta had drank deeply from sorrow’s bitterest cup, but her Christian faith was sufficient under all trials. She was a mother in deed to the family of children who had been given to her, and the three sons and daughter, through the blessed influence of a mother’s love and prayers have all grown to useful manhood and womanhood. Two of her sons, Roy and Fay, reside in Denver, the third, T. Earl, at Pierpoint, South Dakota, and the only daughter, Mrs. Carl Livingston, with whom she was making her home at Reasnor. Fay and Earl arrived in time fo r the funeral services. Mrs. Vanatta is also survived by two brothers, Frank S. Graham of this vicinity and W. H. Graham of Somers, Iowa; also two half-brothers and a half sister, Clarence Johnston of Spencer, South Dakota, Jasper Johnston of New York City and Mrs. Bertha Ruehlen of Minneapolis, Kansas. The late storms prevented the distant ones from being here for the funeral. Mrs. Vanatta had been a faithful member of the M. E. Church from her childhood. ~ Newspaper unknown.
