Death of Roy Martin

Succumbs After many Long Months of Patient Suffering.

Roy Martin, only son of Mr. Robert M. Martin, passed away about three o’clock yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, January 19th, and every hear in this community is pouring out it tenderest sympathy for the bereaved father and sister who for months had kept up their vigils day and night, in the hope of saving their precious boy and brother, and whose heats are now almost crushed under their great burden of sorrow. Roy passed his 27t birthday on the 13th of last November. He was an ideal young man, admired by all who knew him on account of his many excellent qualities, and manly, honorable deportment under all circumstances.

William Roy Martin was born in Mound City, Missouri, Nov. 13, 1881. The greater part of his life, however, had been spent in this city. He graduated from the Newton High School with class of 1901, and from the Illinois State University at Champaign, in 1905. For over two years he was engaged in Architectural Drafting in Chicago. On the 20th day of last March he was attacked with la grippe, and was treated in the hospital for about four months, his father being with him during all of the time. As soon as he was able, with his father he spent three happy weeks with relatives in Logansport, Indiana, seeming to improve all the time. In the latter part of August they returned to their home in Newton, but Roy was never able afterward to be out of the home. He was hopeful to the very last and assured his loved ones that he was going to get well. He was up and dressed after noon of Tuesday-part of the time reclining on his couch. He asked to be helped to his chair, when the great change suddenly came, and immediately upon being placed back on the couch, his heart ceased to beat, and with the familiar smile on his handsome face his spirit took it’s flight. His disease was pleurisy of the heart.

Roy’s mother died in this city on the 23rd of December, 1894. She was a daughter of the late William E. Ervin who died in 1901. After the death of his wife, MR. Martin kept up his home, for the sake of his two children, Helen and Roy. Both of them were given every educational advantage in High School and College. Love welded the filial ties into the closest bonds, and they were so happy until this great sorrow came.

Funeral services will be held at the First M. E. Church at 10:30 o’clock tomorrow, Thursday, January 21st, conducted by Rev. W. P. Stoddard, with music by the church quartette. The pall bearers will be from among Roy’s boyhood friends and schoolmates, Messrs. Sayer and Don Miles, Charlie Hunter, Arthur Evans, Merritt Woodrow and Ray Carrier. After the services the remains will be taken to the Slagel Cemetery in the Hixson Grove, and laid to rest beside his sainted mother and grandparents. ~ Newspaper unknown.
