Vernon H. Balmer, 90, of Newton died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at the Newton Health Care Center in Newton.
Private family services with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating are being held. The family will greet friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home with a lunch. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Kellogg Historical Society or to Hospice of Jasper County. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
The son of John W. and Clara M. T. (Brooks) Balmer, Vernon was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Jasper County, Iowa. He graduated from Kellogg High School in Kellogg in 1936. On Feb. 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Victoria A. Polhamus in Unionville, Mo.
Vernon served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II, and he farmed his family farm until he retired. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in rural Kellogg.
Vernon was a member of the VFW Post 111 in Newton and a past board member of the Kellogg Historical Society. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Vernon is survived by two sons, Vernon Dale Balmer of Spokane, Wash., and Mike (Kim) Balmer of Newton; four daughters, Vicki (Dennis) Wright of Monroe, Janice Balmer (Al Buechler) of Monroe, Debra (Mike) Wunderlich of Post Falls, Idaho, and Nancy (Jim) Wobschall of Hampton; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne (Nora Lee) Balmer of Iowa City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Victoria, in 2006; and two sisters, Imogene Chedester and Bernice Coburn.
