A funeral service for G. Wayne Van Dalen of Newton was held this morning, Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, which has been entrusted with the arrangements. A visitation with the family was held on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Wayne’s name are being designated to the Reasnor First United Methodist Church or Gideon’s International.
Gerald Wayne Van Dalen, 90, the son of Emmett Wesley and Fannie (Clausen) Van Dalen, was born Sept. 4, 1919, near Newton, Iowa. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, he attended Newton schools, graduating from the Newton Senior High, Class of 1936.
On Aug. 9, 1941, Wayne was united in marriage with Valeta Fern Gifford in Killduff, Iowa. He had devoted his life to his wife, family and friends and was a past member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in rural Newton, past member of the Reasnor First United Methodist Church, Gideon’s Association, Jasper County Farm Bureau and the Hummel Club (collectables). He retired from farming and then from Plant #8 at Maytag in 1982.
Wayne died Thursday evening, Oct. 22, 2009, at Park Centre Health Care in Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Valeta, on June 26, 2003; a daughter, Lois Beth, in February 1955; and step-granddaughter Dana on Feb. 27, 1978.
Those left to honor Wayne’s memory include his daughter, Barbara Hickey of Knoxville, Iowa; his sons, Larry (Fern) Van Dalen and Lehrl (Judy Brodersen) Van Dalen, all of Monroe, Iowa; his three grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and 20 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great grandchild; his brother, Rozelle (Margaret) Van Dalen of rural Newton; and his many friends.
