Barbara L. “Bobbie” Shepard, 79, of Newton died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at her home in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Bobbie’s grandson-in-law, Pastor Matt Froah of Yampa Bible Church in Yampa, Colo., officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials in Bobbie’s name may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Eli W. and Mary E. (Brown) Sumpter, Bobbie was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Grinnell, Iowa. She attended Newton Senior High School and lived in Newton for most of her life.
On Dec. 16, 1960, she was united in marriage to Freddie J. Shepard in Marshalltown.
Bobbie was a housewife and enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, mushroom hunting, wood carving, being in the outdoors and collecting frogs. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren, and she also loved her cat.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel E. Bruce of Newton, John F. Bruce of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert W. (Barb) Shepard of Newton; one daughter, Mary Ann (Jerry) Allspach of Newton; eight grandchildren, Tina (Dan) Brown of Newton, Sue Allspach of Des Moines, Shari (Matt) Froah of Yampa, Colo., Jacob (Jeszi) Shepard of Newton, Mickie Bruce of Florida, Stacy Krause of Newton, Matthew Bruce of Newton and Amanda Seelye of Ferguson; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Earnest William “Bill” (Mary Ann) Sumpter of Marshalltown; and a sister, Margaret Ann Van Stock of Hutchinson, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Freddie, in 1995.
