Beautiful Young Life Taken
Inez E. Day, daughter of Elwood W. and Mary E. Day was born Oct. 4th, 1881 and departed this life May 19th, 1909, being at the time of her death 27 years, 7 months and 15 days of age.
In childhood she attended the district school near her home, graduating in 1897. She then attended the Kellogg High School from which she was graduated in 1900. After graduation from the High School she began teaching but very soon decided to prepare herself thoroughly for her chosen work. Pursuance of this decision she entered Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa, at which place she attended until she had completed the Freshman year. After leaving college she taught school until about one and one-half years ago when she returned home in order to assist in the duties of the home.
For several months she had been in poor health gradually failing until it was decided several weeks ago to take her west so that she might have the benefit of a change of climate.
She was first taken to Tonganoxie, Kansas, where she seemed to improve, and a little later to Haviland, Kansas, where her improvement was very marked. Firm hopes were entertained that she would soon be permanently restored to health. It was intended to go on to the mountains as soon as the weather became sufficiently warm.
Suddenly she was attacked with a severe case of tonsilitis the severity of which in her weakened condition she was not able to resist and on May 19th she departed this life to be forever with the Lord. In early childhood she gave her heart to God and at the age of eleven made a public confession. During the entire time of her illness she evinced the greatest patience and reconciliation, having a firm, practical, christian experience which was her stay and protection.
Inez E. Day was a choice young woman, one of high ideals and firm purposes in life. Ever modest and unassuming she yet served with more than ordinary acceptability her church and other christian interests and organizations in very important capacities. She was frequently called to serve in important places when the regular officers were absent. She was secretary and treasurer of the B. S. work of Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends, president of the Jasper county C. E. Association, president of the C. E. Union of Lynn Grove Quarterly Meeting of Friends; reading clerk of the Quarterly Meeting and connected with the S. S. work in important capacities. She was a great lover of music and was a musician of fine ability, having studied this in connection with her other work while a student at Penn College. In all these places she exalted the work and humbled herself, studying how best to do the work and thus serve her church and the Kingdom of God.
There is something very sad and pathetic about the early termination of so beautiful and servicable a life and yet something so enobling and uplifting. Like the flower which is soon gone so she is gone from us quickly; yet like the flower she has filled the atmosphere of her surroundings with the glorious and enduring perfume of an exhalted and enduring character and left us all and the world better for having lived. It is said that the good always die young and this is surely true for the life of a really good person is too short no matter how many years it endures.
We bow in submission to the will of our Father in Heaven who knoweth best, and who can supply the vacancy made by the departure of our sister and friend. She leaves to mourn her loss a father, mother, one brother, and one sister, and numerous friends.
The funeral services were held at Center Friends church, Saturday afternoon at half past two, and conducted by Dr. David M. Edwards of Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa, assisted by Miss Carrie Butler, the pastor, and the remains were laid to rest in Center Friends cemetery.
Card Of Thanks:--We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to our many neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted us during the death and burial of our beloved daughter and sister.--Mr. and Mrs. Elwood W. Day and family.
