Shankland, Betty Louise – 1922-2009

WAVERLY – Betty Louise Shankland, 87, of Waverly, formerly of Newton, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Waverly Health Center.
Betty was born on March 9, 1922, in Chariton, Iowa, the daughter of Guilford Williby. She was raised by her grandmother Regina Kumm and graduated from the Chariton High School in 1940. On February 16, 1943 Betty was united in marriage to Robert C. Shankland in Princeton, Missouri.
During her life she worked as a bank teller for Bank of America in San Francisco, Calif.; as a secretary for the doctors’ office of Norris, Forsythe, and Conkling in Newton, Iowa for 14 years; and as a secretary for the law firm Hammer, Matthias, Tyler, and Levin in Newton for 16 years. Betty retired in the late 1980’s and then moved to Waverly in 1993 to be closer to her daughter.
Betty’s enjoyments included Wartburg basketball and football, the Green Bay Packers, baking, and needlework. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton where she served as deacon, Wartburg Booster Club, and the Jasper County Care Review Board. Betty was also active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Betty’s memory is honored by her daughter, Susan K. Shankland of Waverly; her sister-in-law, Majorie (Derwin) Elliott of Cedar Rapids; and her aunt, Leona Kumm of Indianola.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her step-mother, Otha Williby; her grandparents; a half-brother, Raymond Williby; and her uncle, John Kumm.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newtonwith Chaplain Joni Farland officiating. Burial will follow at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. The Wallace Family Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Visitation will be today, July 20, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m.. Visitation will also be on Tuesday for an hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Heart Association, Cedar Valley Hospice, National Breast Cancer Association or the Robert C. Shankland Scholarship at Wartburg. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com or at www.wallacefamilyfuneralhome.com.
