Verna M. Dexter, 78, of Newton died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newton, with the Rev. Paul Axness and Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. Vsitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Friday, July 10, at Wallace Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials may be left in Verna’s name to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
The daughter of Peter August and Bernice Ella (Alitz) Mathiesen, Verna was born on March 9, 1931, in Mitchell. She grew up in the Mitchell area. She was united in marriage to Eldon Dexter on Nov. 9, 1968, in Ralston, Neb. She and Eldon had lived in Newton since 1969.
A 1949 graduate of Mitchell Consolidated Schools, Verna worked as a machinist for the Maytag Company.
She was a charter member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and member of Women of the Moose. Verna enjoyed gardening, camping, baking, making candy and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Eldon of Newton; one daughter, Rebecca (Wayne) Kinney of Van Meter; three grand-children, Chelsea Dexter of Van Meter, Caitlyn Kinney of Van Meter and Patrick Kinney of Owasso, Okla.; and three sisters, Gail Hughes of Littleton, Colo., Ruth (Jerry) Auten of Fort Dodge and Dorothy (Willis) Kester of Fort Dodge.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Katherine Niels; and an infant daughter, Debbie.
