Chas. Rees, 92, Buried at Woodbine, Iowa, Saturday
Charles J. Rees, eldest son of Daniel and Sarah Rees, was born February 15th, 1857, in Jasper county, Iowa, and departed this life March 8th, 1949, at his home in Woodbine at the advanced age of 92 years and 20 days.
When a young man he came to western Iowa and was an early pioneer and knew the hardships of pioneer life. On December 30th, 1880 he was united in marriage to Anna R. Walker at her parents’ home near Persia, Iowa, and for nearly 69 years they have shared life’s joys and sorrows together.
They established a home near Persia, where they resided for two years then moved to a farm west of Dunlap, where they lived for many years, and in 1908 they retired and moved to Woodbine.
To this union was born three sons, Edward of Montevideo, Minnesota; Jess of Dunlap, Iowa, and Corbett, who preceded his father in death in 1941. He also leaves a foster daughter, Mrs. Jennie DeLozier of Greenforest, Arkansas.
There are seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, one brother, George Rees of California; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Seeley of Appleton, Wisconsin; Mrs. Tina Barker of Mingo, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Whitehead and Mrs. Belle McKeever, both of Des Moines, Iowa, and many, many friends.
Mr. Rees was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Woodbine since 1909. He was a cheerful, sunny disposition, ever mindful of others. He has tenderly cared for his aged companion, who has been in poor health for several years. He lived a long and active life, but on the morning of March 2nd he was stricken with paralysis, from which he never regained consciousness, and on March 8th the Lord in his tender mercy called him home, and while we shall miss his tender voice and cheerful smile, we shall ever cherish his memory.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. Kruse officiating. Music was furnished by C. L. Nicely, accompanied by Carolyn Rees.
Pallbearers were Ira Rees, Merle Rees, Lyle Walker, Leonard Walker, Lester Walker and Albert Walker. Burial was in the Woodbine cemetery. – Woodbine Times.
