Final Rites Held For Barney Snetselaar
Barney Snetselaar, son of Guert and Jeanette Snetselaar, was born June 28, 1884, at Ada in Gelderland, in the Netherlands, where he grew to manhood.
On March 9, 1909 he arrived in America. He worked near Pella and in the Bethel community, where he met Miss Dena Resoort, whom he married on July 29, 1911 at the Methodist Church in Reasnor, Iowa. They made their home near Prairie City until 1924, then moved near Mitchellville, where they lived for the next 14 years. They moved back to Prairie City community for an 8 year period, and in 1947 returned to Mitchellville where he spent the rest of his life.
During most of his life he was engaged in farming and for many years was also a buyer of livestock. In this business, the fact that his word could be depended on made him many friends. He was a man doing things for them and with them. As a past time he enjoyed fishing, a pleasure that many of his friends shared with him.
On Nov. 11, 1949 he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. Then on Nov. 23, 1950, he suffered another stroke which took his sight, but he never complained, always believing in his Heavenly Father. During his illness he was a cooperative patient appreciating all that his doctor and his loved ones were doing to help him. He passed away at his home on June 4, 1951, at the age of 66 years, 11 months, and 7 days. He will long be remembered as a kind and loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, 6 daughters, Angeline and June and Mrs. George Patterson, of Mitchellville, Mrs. Wilbour Stemler of Runnells, Mrs. Anthony Griffieon of Knoxville, and Mrs. Arthur Smith of Ridgewood, Long Island, New York; 5 sons, John of Mitchellville, Albert of Runnells, Ben and William of Colfax, and Henry of Prairie City; 2 sisters, Mrs. Albert Laurens of Pella and Mrs. Gertrude De Joode of Pleasantville, a half-sister Effie in the Netherlands; 4 brothers, Ben of Prairie City, John of Ankeny, twin brothers Guert and Albert in the Netherlands and a half-brother, Joe, also in the Netherlands, six grandchildren, a large number of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held June 6th from the Methodist church in Mitchellville with Rev. M. J. Nash officiating. Burial was in Waveland Cemetery at Prairie City.
