Funeral services for Nadine Dee of Newton were today, Tuesday, May 26, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton was entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are being designated to Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ — Kitchen Fund, Hospice of Jasper County or to the charity of donor’s choice.
Nadine Hazel Dee, 92, the daughter of John H. and Beulah (Patterson) Schmidt, was born Aug. 29, 1916, in Baxter. A longtime resident of the Baxter area, she graduated from the Baxter Senior High, class of 1933.
On Dec. 25, 1935, Nadine was united in marriage with Glenn Dee in Baxter. They farmed for 42-plus years in the Rhodes and Bondurant areas.
She had devoted her life to her husband, family and friends, and was an active member of the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ. Nadine enjoyed quilting, crocheting, china painting, fishing, mushroom hunting and crafts. Many of her quilts and plates were given away to her family and friends. Nadine scheduled programs at the Iowa State Fair in both the women’s and children’s building and the Variety Theater, there, as superintendent for a number of years. She also served at the Jasper County Fair, in the quilting division. She was the Polk County Farm Bureau Women’s Chairman and The Family Living Committee, of the Polk County Extension Service.
Nadine loved her many nieces and nephews, who spent many vacations on the farm, and her good neighbors in both Santiago and Baxter, who were always a joy to her.
Nadine died on Thursday, May 21, 2009, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn on Feb. 7, 2005; her three sisters, LeOna, Esther and Margaret; and five brothers, John, Charles, Richard, Leland and Eugene.
Those left to honor Nadine’s memory include her sister, Joan Smith of Newton; her brother, Larry Schmidt of Baxter; many nieces and nephews; and her many great friends.
