Messmaker, Ola Mae - 1919-2009

Ola Mae Van Arkel Holly Messmaker, 90, died March 29, 2009, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in Prairie City, Iowa. Inurnment will be at the Waveland Cemetery.
Ola was born in Pella, Iowa, on Feb. 10, 1919, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Koopman) Van Arkel. After the death of her mother in 1924, she came to Prairie City to live with Aunt Jennie and Uncle Murray Ten Hagen. She graduated from Prairie City High School in 1936 and attended the Iowa School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines. She was a cosmetologist in Prairie City for 45 years. She was united in marriage to Dale J. Messmaker on March 4, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1991.
She is survived by a brother, Edgar Van Arkel of Pella, Iowa; Ray Ten Hagen of Indianola, Iowa; David and Lisa Burns; Mary and Delmar Emmack; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Dale; her parents; brothers, Cornelius, Gerald, Joe and Robert Van Arkel; Max Ten Hagen; her sister, Dorothy Burns; and Aunt Jennie and Uncle Murray Ten Hagen.
Ola was a member of the Prairie City United Methodist Church, Women’s Society and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a charter member of the T.T.T. Society at Prairie City. She enjoyed cooking and baking.
Memorials may be given to Jasper County Hospice.
Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
