Schaumburg, Louis – 1921-2009

Louis G. Schaumburg, 87, of Bettendorf, formerly of Rock Island, Ill., died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Iowa Masonic Health Facilities in Bettendorf.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Hodgson Funeral Home in Rock Island. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline, Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Heartland Hospice.
Louis was born on March 12, 1921, in Newton, the son of Henry and Millie Thompson Schaumburg. He married Bonnie Hughes on Sept. 11, 1943, in Newton. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2005.
Mr. Schaumburg retired from the Rock Island Arsenal Finance & Accounting office in 1985. He worked for Maytag Co. in Newton before moving to Davenport where he started at the Arsenal cafeteria working many years as office manager and later as manager of the cafeteria. He also was employed by Hynes & Howes Insurance Co. for a short time.
Louis loved all sports, especially softball and baseball. He was a star softball pitcher for the first Rock Island Arsenal team, being referred to as their young sensation. He later pitched for the Colman Florist team. He also enjoyed biking and golfing. Louis was a wonderful and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include his daughters (and spouses), Ellen (Don) Ekstrom of LeClaire, and Lynda (Tim) Frost of Rock Island; sister, Barbara (Les) Beard of Des Moines; sister in-law, Josephine Schaumburg of Des Moines; grandchildren, Sherry Beard of East Moline and Matthew Ekstrom of Davenport; step-grandchildren, Mike (Shelley) Frost of Des Moines, Christina White of Davenport and Annie Hinz of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren, Colton and Cameron Beard; step-great grandchildren, Michael and Nicholas White, Taylor Luke, Andrew Hinz and Brody and Lucy Frost; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, three brothers, two sisters and a son in-law preceded him in death.
Louis’ family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Iowa Masonic Health Facilities and Heartland Hospice for the loving care and compassion they showed to him.
