Ray Martinez
Killed In Action

Octablana J. Martinez of Gary, Ind., formerly of Newton, has received word from the War Department that his son, Pfc. Raymond A. Martines, was killed in action in Austria on May 3.

Pvt. Martinez graduated from Newton high school in 1942 and entered the service in February 1943. He was sent overseas the following year.

Ray was born on June 29, 1923, and will be remembered around here as an amateur boxer, boxing on the Des Moines Golden Gloves, Newton V.F.W. and the Cedar Rapids Gazette teams.

He is survived by his father, two brothers, Pfc. Robert Martinez, serving with the army, and Frank Martines, in Indiana Harbor, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Valencia and Ruby Martinez, both of Gary. ~ The Newton Daily News, June 6,1 1945.
