Marie C. (Schumann) Floss, 95, of Newton, formerly of rural Baxter, died on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with Chaplain Dennis Coe of Newton Village in Newton officiating.
The family greeted friends Monday, Feb. 16, during visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials to the Jasper County Historical Museum may be left in Marie’s name at the funeral home.
The daughter of Paul and Dora (Markman) Schumann, she was born on Jan. 24, 1914, in Baxter. On Jan. 10, 1940, she was united in marriage to Eugen Hans Floss in rural Baxter.
A graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1932 and a graduate of AIB in 1934, she was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife. She was a member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau, Neighborly Neighbors, Garden Club and Jasper County Historical Society. Marie worked many years as an election day poll watcher. Marie loved to have her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around. She also enjoyed gardening, flower gardening and she was an avid reader.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Judy) Floss and Richard (Beverly Clark) Floss, all of Baxter; four grandchildren, Craig (Karen) Floss of Clive, Mark Floss of Baxter, Heather (Augie) Rethwill of Roseburg, Ore., and Gretchan (Ivan) Anderholm of Hermiston, Ore.; two step-grandchildren, Barry Groos (Marcie Stout) of Ames and Amy Wilder of New York, N.Y.; and 10 great-grandchildren, Brennan, Caleb, Keaton, Jarrett, Tristan, Jordan, Alex, Luke, Madison and Caitlin.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugen Hans Floss in 1989; and sister, Juanita Schumann.
