Greenleaf, William C.

William C. Greenleaf died at the home of his son, L. A. Greenleaf, in Mound Prairie Township, Dec. 6, 1895. He was born in Stanstead Co., Canada east, Feb 13, 1807. He lived to reach the advanced age of 88 years, 9 months and 23 days.

Sometime after his first marriage he moved from Canada to Bloomington, Ill. From there he moved to Davenport, Ia., and in 1865 he moved to Jasper Co., and located on the farm, which became the family home in Mound Prairie Township. He was married in 1832 to Mary Whitcomb. These parents had seven children. After the death of his first wife, he again married at Davenport, to Eunice Brown, who died in 1881, leaving four children. Mr. Greenleaf married a third time but he and his wife did not live long together. Of the eleven children, seven are now living. For several years Mr. Greenleaf has made his home with his son, in whose family he was very happy and comfortably passed his old age. His greatest affliction was the loss of his sight, which has been very poor for the last two or three years. He became a Christian several years ago, and in 1892 he united with the Congregational Church in Newton. His faith and hope were matters of great comfort to him, and he passed from the world with the confident expectation of rest in heaven. The funeral services were held at the Bear Grove schoolhouse, Dec. 8th, and the attendance was large. The sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. C. C. Harrah. His body was laid in Greenleaf (Mound Prairie) Cemetery at the corner of the old home farm of the deceased. Mr. Greenleaf was an industrious, good citizen, and has done his part with the old residents of our county to make Jasper Co. the desirable place to live that it is today. All the family have the sympathy of their many friends in this bereavement. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, December 13, 1895 Page 1, Column 5
