David G. McDermott, 60, of Newton died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2008, at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of the Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
The son of Thomas McDermott and Verda H. Daniels, David was born on Nov. 15, 1948, in Newton. He grew up in Newton and when he returned from Vietnam he lived in Denver and Fort Collins, Colo., for many years. David moved back to Newton in 2005.
David was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in Newton. David work for Tropiquatics in Denver, Colo., delivering and setting up aquariums at Wal-Mart stores and at pet stores in the west and southwest United States.
He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Colorado. David served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps, serving two tours of duty in the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his son, Jeff McDermott of West Virginia; three grandchildren, one sister, Shirley (Mike) Goodwin of Newton; two nieces, Missy and Pat Goodwin; one great-niece, Sharis Jones; and many other relatives and friends
David was preceded in death by his mother.
