Carpenter, Luella Marie Koon - 1926-2008

Luella Marie Koon Carpenter, the daughter of Charlie and Luella Wright Koon was born August 28, 1926 in Newton. She and her family lived in Marceline, MO and Elliott, but most of her life was spent in Jasper County in or near Ira. Marie graduated from Mingo High School in 1943, went on to AIB, and worked as a secretary at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH during WWII. She worked in the Maytag Office three years and as a secretary at Winpower for 32 years.
On September 19, 1946 Marie was united in marriage with Cecil Alton Carpenter at the First Lutheran Church in Newton. They farmed in Missouri for three years and then returned to Jasper County making their home in Ira.
Death came to Marie on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at her home in Newton. Marie was preceded in death by her parents in 1975; her husband, Cecil, in 1998; a brother, Jack Koon, in 1971; a sister, Viola Koon; in 1994; a brother in infancy; and son-in-law, Glenn Sterling, in 2002.
Those left to honor the memory of Marie include her son, Tom Carpenter, and partner, Josh Brown, of Newton; her two daughters, Linda and Sam Brown of East Moline, Ill., and LuAnne and Dave Haack of Cylinder; special niece, Aricia and Ben Beckham of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren, Eric, Angie, Melissa, Aaron, Shaun, Kelly, Wendy, Carolyn, Gretchen, Jason, Julie, Derek, and Melanie; 20 great-grandchildren, Ana, Ben, Carrie, Cecil, Nick, Conner, Katelyn, Kiera, Connor, Lexi, Willow, Harrison, Tyler, Wyatt, Brooklyn, Calie, Noelle, Brady, Christian, and Devon; and nieces, nephews, and many friends.
The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Funeral Services for Marie will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the funeral home with burial at Newton Union Cemetery.
Following the burial, there will be a lunch at the Ira United Church. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County, Ira United Church or Progress Industries may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home.
