Lorraine E. Swaim, 81, died on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. At 7 p.m., a public vigil service will be held and then the family will greet friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a coffee time in McCann Center at the church.

A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in rural Newton.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the donor’s choice or in Lorraine’s name which the family will divide between several groups. Memorials may be left at the church at the time of the events or at the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil of Newton; daughter, Christine (Larry) Crew of Pella; her four grandchildren, Ryan Crew of Pella, Martin Wells of Dandridge, Tenn., Shelly Vermer of Ottumwa and Danny Crew of Centerville; great-grandson, Desmond “Diss” Col-Wells; and brother, Raymond Vanek of St. Paul, Minn.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.
