J. Walter “Walt” Kingery, 84, of Newton died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home. Burial will follow lunch at Newton Union Cemetery.
The Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be left to Hospice of Jasper County or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walt’s name.
The son of Elmer and Birdie (Brown) Kingery, Walt was born on Dec. 4, 1929, in Marion County. A 1942 graduate of Newton Senior High School, Walt was united in marriage to Irene Hildebrand on July 16, 1943, in San Francisco, Calif.
Walt was a tool and die maker at Maytag and a supervisor over tool grinders for many years. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, American Legion Post 111 and Maytag management. Walt was a tremendous woodworker. He made cedar chests, coffee tables and many accessories out of old barn boards. Walt enjoyed hunting, especially for pheasant and quail. He had served as a Palo Alto School board member. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Kingery of Newton; one son, David (Pam) Kingery of Newton; three grandchildren, Jake Stoecker, Eric (Carissa) Stoecker and Brian (Kelly) Stoecker; two great-grandchildren, Zoe and Merrick; one brother, Clifford “Buzz” (Carol) Kingery of Newton; and two sisters, Mabel Hobbs and Myrtle (Herb) Schwarz, both of Newton.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Larry “Wink” Kingery, Clarence E. Kingery and Harrold Kingery.
