Lake Mills - Bertha L. Werling Knott, 87, of Lake Mills, a resident of Newton from 1939 until 1992, died Tuesday, July 12, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Graveside rites will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills. There will be viewing at the cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Memorials in her name will be accepted.

Survivors are two daughter and sons-in-law, Mildred and Wayne Miller of Lake Mills and Joan and James Green of Ellensburg, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Cormier of West Covina, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in October, 1990, parents, a brother, Ernest Werling, a sister, Eva Chapman, and two-half-brothers, James and Edward Werling.

Mrs. Knott, a homemaker and a former employee of Nollen Drug in Newton, and her husband had operated restaurants in Birmingham and Tipton and a laundromat in Newton.

She was a member of the Newton First Lutheran Church, Newton Woman's Club and the BGWC Affiliate.

The daughter of George D. and Margaret Bachman Werling, she was born Feb. 27, 1907 in Tipton and was graduated from Tipton High School.

She was married to Joseph A. Knott in 1926. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, July 1994
