Ruth A. Broderson

Ruth A. Broderson, 78, of 417 W. 9th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1949, died Monday, Nov. 2, at the University Hospital in Iowa City of pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Scott Coulter, pastor of the church, and the Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence funeral Home after noon Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 and 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the United Presbyterian Church of the organization or the donor's choice will be accepted.

Survivors are a daughter, Melissa Broderson of Iowa City; a step-daughter, Sally (Mrs. Daryl) Basler of Ellensburg, Wash.; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Naomi (Mrs. Loren) Loupee of Newton and Esther (Mrs. Wilbur) Sharpe of Columbus, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ray, April 4, 1967, four brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Broderson, a member of the United Presbyterian Church and Philathea Sunday school, was a trustee and elder and was active in the Campbell Circle.

She had served as a nurse in the U.S. Army at Camp Hale in Leadville, Colo., during World War II. Following the war she worked in several area nursing homes and assisted her husband in the Western Auto Store.

The daughter of Herman H. and Lydia Heyer Achtermann, she was born Sept. 28, 1914 in Alpena, S.D., was graduated from Bristow High School and Marshalltown Deaconess School of Nursing.

She was married to Ray Broderson in 1952 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1992
