WAUKEGAN, Ill. - Max Ernest "Jim" Blum, 69, of Waukegan, Ill., a former resident of Laurel, died Friday, July 23, at St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan.

Survivors are his wife, Beulah; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Gail of Jefferson; a daughter, Elaine Allbee of Grand Junction; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Morris "Short" of Haverhill and Lyle "Toad" of Newton; a sister, Doris "Sally" Lyle of Laurel; a step-sister, Lucille Cox; two step-brothers, Bobbie Jay and Roger Jay, both of Marshalltown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Blum had been a supervisor at Anchor glass in California before being transferred to Waukegan. He retired from the company after 30 years of service.

Mr. Blum served in the Navy on the battleship, U.S.S. West Virginia, during World War II, was a member of the Gurnee Legion Post and the AARP and enjoyed fishing, playing cards and traveling.

The son of Howard and Una Mae Thomas Blum, he was born Feb. 25, 1924 in Glidden and attended school in Glidden.

Funeral services were held at the Hasting Funeral Home in Jefferson.

The Rev. Kevin Leveck, pastor of the Scranton United Methodist Church, conducted services. Burial was in the Willow Township Cemetery in Greene County. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, July 1993
