Ashley Rites This Afternoon

Dr. Robert L. Stuart Conducts Services at Murdoch Funeral Home.

Funeral services fro Mrs. Margaret Hanke Ashley, who died Sunday evening, were held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Murdoch funeral home. Dr. Robert Lee Stuart, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, was in charge. Two solos, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “He Walks With Me” were sung by Mrs. Fred Reeve. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Alva, Merlo and Don Hanke, Elmer Kracht, Clyde Hunter and Charles Fry. Burial was made in the Newton cemetery.

Mrs. Ashley was born in Ireland, Dec. 25, 1843, and came to America with her parents [Armour] at the age of seven. The family settled in Philadelphia and she grew in womanhood there, andd was married to Edward Hanke of that city in 1861.

After Mr. Hanke’s return from the Civil war, they moved west, and for many years were residents of Mariposa township near Newton. Thirty four years ago the family moved to Newton to make their home. Mr. Hanke died 23 years ago. Nine years later Mrs. Hanke was married to John Ashley of this city. Mr. Ashley preceded her in death a year ago.

During her long residence in Newton, Mrs. Ashley was a member and worker in the Methodist Episcopal church. Surviving are two sons, Dallas Hanke of Newton and John Hanke of Des Moines and a daughter, Mrs. Dena Hanke Parks of Des Moines. Seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, October 5, 1926.
