William Bassett dies early today; services Monday

NEWTON - William O. Bassett, 71, of Mc Cann Village, a longtime resident of Newton, died this morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Wallace Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Saturday.

Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association will be accepted.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. William (Joan) Ver Heul of Bakersfield, Calif., Mrs. Terry (Barbara) Trotter of Oxnard, Calif., Mrs. David (Sally) Rorabaugh of Newton and Mrs. Larry (Susan) Forman of Omaha, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Grace of Chicago, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lois, in 1969, and a sister, Mrs. Laura Vansice.

Mr. Bassett was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Retirees, UAW, Local 997.

He has been a die setter at the Maytag Co., prior to his retirement nine years ago.

The son of John Harl and Persis Crippen Bassett, he was born Sept. 27, 1911 at Hinckley, Minn., attended Newton schools and was a 1929 graduate of Newton Community High School.

He was married to Lois Cochran June 27, 1937 in Newton.

Transcriber note: Death date of 10-22-1982 taken from Newton Union Cemetery records. Newton Union Cemetery records states his father's middle name was Harlow.
