Larry E. Jontz

Larry Edwin Jontz, 59, of Rt. 2, Box 98, Newton, zoning administrator for Jasper County for 10 years and a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Friday, April 19, at the Holy Trinity Hospital and Medical Center in Methuen, Mass., following a major heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist church.

Douglas Reynolds, pastor of Wittemberg United Church of Christ, north of Newton, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Jasper County Senior Citizens may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Janice; a daughter, Linda (Mrs. Stephen) Gehling of Knoxville; his mother, Maude Jontz of Newton; a step-grandson; two sisters, Patricia (Mrs. Herman) Deaton of Newton and Cheryl Springer of Dallas, Texas; two nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father July 6, 1927.

Mr. Jontz, a farmer for 30 years, was a member of a Wittemberg United Church of Christ. He had served as a member of the board of directors of the Central Iowa Water Association.

The son of Bert E. and Maude M. Logsdon Jontz, he was born July 24, 1931 in Ira and was a 1949 graduate of Newton Community High School.

He was married to Janice Schmidt Nov. 4, 1950 in the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1991
