Dwight L. Johnson, Dies on Sunday; Services Tuesday

Dwight L. Johnson, 89, of 713 E. 10th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1926, died Sunday morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 5 p.m. today.

Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions to the Heart Fund will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Vera; two daughters, Mrs. Ben (Thelma) Shepherd of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Donald (Doris) Van Ryswyk of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren, Phillip Shepherd of Nashville, Tenn., Margaret Schmitt of Naperville, Ill., and Curtis Van Ryswyk and Carol Van Ryswyk of Aurora, colo.; two great-grandchildren, Jennifer Schmitt and Katherine Shepherd; and a step-daughter, Mrs. Gerrit (Lana) Van Wyk of Mountain Home, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Veda Johnson in 1944; and a sister, Mrs. Rose Elliott of Ames.

Mr. Johnson, a retired Maytag Co., employee, was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and the Maytag 25-Year Club.

The son of Wilbur and Della Turner Johnson, he was born April 3, 1889 in Clarence and attended Oskaloosa Community High School and William Penn College in Oskaloosa.

He was married to Vera Schultz Jan. 9, 1955 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, June 1978
