PELLA - Jens Hagbart Jensen, 102, of Pella, a former resident of the Monroe community, died Friday, June 24, at the Pella Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Monroe United Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Tom Bass, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella and family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Monroe United Presbyterian Church will be accepted.

Survivors are two daughters and a son-in-law, Kristine Buckley of Bussey and Jean and Hugo Vander Velden of Monroe; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora, Jan. 19, 1975.

Mr. Jensen, a veteran of World War I, had woked in Chicago, Ill., and later as a farm hand for a cousin in the Otley area. After his discharge from the service, he farmed near Otley and for 23 years in the Monroe area prior to retirment. He later became a guard at the Maytag Co., in Newton.

Mr. Jensen, king at the Iowa State Fair for several years, was a member of Monroe United Presbyterian Church, the Forever Young Club and a life member of the Monroe American Legion.

The son of Peder and Kristine Hansen Jensen, he was born April 1, 1892 in Hokksund, Norway. He came to the United States May 6, 1903 at the age of 11 with a 16-years-old sister to live in Chicago, Ill, with an aunt. He was educated in Chicago, Ill., and resided there until moving to Otley in 1915.

Mr. Jensen resided at Hilltop Manor North in Pella from July, 1988, until Jan. 7, 1994 when he was moved to Inn Care at Pella Community Hospital. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, June 1994
