John W. Koppin Dies Saturday; Rites Tuesday

John W. Koppin, 83, of 516 S. 11th Ave. W., longtime resident of Newton, died Saturday morning (May 21, 1977) at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.

The Rev. Morris Hay, pastor of the Hickory Grove Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Neoma) Eggan of Fairfax, Va.; a step-daughter, Edna Thill of Buffalo, N. Y.; two step sons, Ronald Rylance of Fargo, N.D., and Allen Rylance of Aberdeen, S.D.; a sister, Mrs. Arlie (Meta) Antle of Kellogg; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Paul (Lilly) Koppin of Newton; a brother-in-law, John Petermeier of Newton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Nettie Vander Venter; infant son in 1918; second wife, Catherine, Sept. 11, 1972; a brother, Paul; and a sister, Mrs. John (Selma) Petermeier.

Mr. Koppin was a member of the UAW Retiree’s Union, Local 997, and a life member of the Elks Lodge.

A retired employee of the Maytag Co.; he had been a livestock trucker and railroad switchman.

The son of August and Hanna Klopping* Koppin, he was born Feb. 25, 1894 in Jasper County.

He was married to Catherine Murie Rylance July 7, 1954 at Fargo, N.D.

*Note: He was the son of August and Louise Marie Oltag Koppin.
