Mr. Lemuel Dowden died October 21, 1888, at his home near Prairie City.

He was born in Harrison County, Ohio, December 31, 1820.

Was married to Miss Catherine M. Moncrief July 31, 1845. They came to Long Grove, Scott County, Iowa, in the fall of 1852.

In February, 1867, they came to the farm near Prairie City where he lived 21 years. Mrs. Dowden died June 14, 1876. Three of their children died in infancy. Eight are living -- three sons and five daughters. His children were all with him during his last days, except Mrs. Thompson, of Washington, D. C. The funeral was held at the Christian church.
