Wednesday, August 12, 1896Death came as a relief
Theodore Bennik, the young man who was so badly hurt by being thrown from a horse about five months ago, and who has been taken care of for some time at the Poor Farm, died last Thursday morning. He was about twenty-four years old, an industrious, worthy young man. He was a Christian, also, and a member of the Lutheran church in Holland. He was born in Eden, Holland, in 1862, and lived in that country until March of 1892, when he came to the new world to make his fortune. He had no relatives on this side of the water. Last fall, he went back to see his parents and sisters and brothers, and told them he would not be back for ten years. While he has been at the Poor Farm, a number of our people have become interested in him, as he was so sweet and patient in his suffering and so fully appreciated kindnesses to him.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at half past three o’clock, conducted by Rev. E. J. Rice. They held it out under the big trees near the house. No one was present as mourner except one young man who came over with him from Holland. Mr. Bennik was buried in the Newton cemetery alongside of the showman who was killed and buried here several years ago. It seemed a lonely funeral, so far from home and friends, but to him loneliness is forever past and Heaven his home.
