The Newton Journal, Wednesday, May 16, 1894

Charley Arnold is dead. This is the mournful news that saddened every man and woman in Sterling, Wednesday morning. For nearly three long years Charley had suffered and everybody had watched and hoped for his recovery. None but prayed for his convalescence; none but tried to cheer and comfort him in his sickness; none but sympathized with his loving wife in her hours of trial. Never did man make a harder fight against the grim reaper; never losing hope - never giving up to the inevitable.

When the sad end came the whole community sorrowed and grieved. Charley has left this world of strife and struggle-this preliminary to the life which he has gained-the life eternal.

Charles Arnold was born in Jasper County, Iowa, June 20, 1859. In 1884 he with H. L. Millard built the International Mills of this city, in which business has been engaged until his death. June 23, 1884, he married Miss Bertha Tebbe. The union was blessed by three children, but one, Harry, now living. Mr. Arnold was a member of Fidelity Lodge No. 123, Knights of Pythias.

The funeral was held yesterday at the late home at 2:00o'clock, under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias, Rev. A. H. Parker delivered an eloquent and impressive eulogy on the life of the deceased. A large number of sorrowing friends attended the services and followed the remains to the cemetery. ~ Sterling (Kan.)Champion, April 27, 1894.
