The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday, April 18, 1894

ANOTHER OLD CITIZEN GONE- Our community was shocked and pained on Tuesday morning, when the fact became known that Mr. W. H. Hough was dead. Few men in our midst have been so universally loved and respected as Mr. Hough, and few men have so thoroughly deserved the homage that was paid him.

He has not been entirely well for a couple of years past, and has occasionally been kept at home for a few days by sickness. He seemed better on Monday afternoon, and seemed to enjoy the company of Mr. Dan Arnold, an old neighbor who took supper with him. At about 9:00 he complained of not feeling well, and his wife helped him to bed, the doctor was sent for, but he was beyond human help, and at 9:30 his spirit took its flight to Bulah Land. Heart failure was the cause of his death.

Mr. Wm. H. Hough was born of Quaker parents, on a farm in Loudon County, Old Virginia, Nov. 27th, 1824. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Bond, May 27th, 1850, who still survives him. Seven children were born to this worthy couple, three of whom have gone before, two sons and two daughters are still living, all of them in Newton.

He came to Iowa in 1858, settling in Newton, where he has always remained, and has been generally engaged in the mercantile business, in the meantime, however, holding the office of County Recorder for two terms, and has held other city and township offices.

He joined the Methodist church before leaving Virginia, and connected himself with that body of Christian when he came to Newton, and has eve been one of its most active and influential members, and a greater part of the time one of its officers.

As a man, as a citizen, and as a Christian, we know of no one who have gone from Newton to the great beyond, who so well deserved the love, confidence and respect of all who knew him, and there are few men whose acquaintance was so extensive in Jasper County.

To the family and friends we extend our most sincere sympathies, in which our entire community joins.

The funeral will take place from the congregational Church this afternoon at three o'clock.
