The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday Mar. 14, 1894

Mrs. J. H. Fugard and Mrs. W. R. Kingdon, were called to Mahaska Co., last week, by the sad news of the death of their mother, Mrs. B. Slemmons. She died with a paralytic stroke, at her home near Fremont.

In company with a daughter-in-law, she had gone to the barn to look after the poultry, when she suddenly sank down and expired, without a word or a struggle. Some eight years ago, while living near Prairie City, she had a paralytic stroke, which left her partially crippled. But her general health has been quite good, and so on the day of her death she seemed in better health and spirits than usual. The burial was at Fremont and was attended by her husband and eight children, and a large company of relatives and friends.
