The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday, Mar. 21, 1894

OBITUARY - On Wednesday morning of last week, just before going to press, we learned of the sudden death of Mrs. Hugh McElroy, residing five miles north of Newton. From definite information subsequently received, we glean the following facts: Mrs. McElroy and her husband were in town Tuesday, she seeming to be in excellent spirits and enjoying good health. While returning home in their buggy engaging in conversation, Mrs. McElroy suddenly ceased talking, her muscles relaxed as in a fainting condition, and she became unconscious. Her husband, supposing she was suffering from some temporary weakness, supported her as best he could, drove along towards their home, but was unable to obtain any response to questions. Presently, when within three-fourths of a mile of home, she revived sufficiently to say: "Please let the horses trot. I want to get home as soon as possible." These were her last words. She lived, remaining in an unconscious condition, about three hours after arriving at home.

Thus, at the age of sixty-one, was Mrs. McElroy called to her Heavenly home, for which she was so abundantly prepared. She had four children by a former marriage, three of whom are now living and were present at the funeral: A. J. Wright, of Newton; Silas M. Wright, of Grand Haven, Michigan, and Mrs. Addie Corbett, of Des Moines.

Mrs. McElroy was a woman who impressed everyone who met her by her genuine sweetness of disposition, loving sympathy and consistent, Christian life. Her aim seemed always to be helpful to others. In church-work, she was very zealous and efficient, a power in the Master's cause wherever she went.

Rev. J. J. Mitchell, of Chester Center, her former pastor, came to give the funeral sermon, she having requested it, at one time. The services took place at the Wittemberg church and the beloved form interred in the Newton cemetery.
