The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1894

Obituary.- J. M. McFarland, of the old dry goods firm of McFarland & Son, of this city, died in Des Moines, Monday morning of this week, at 5 o'clock. His death was as quiet and peaceful as if he were going to sleep. He has been living with his son Henry and family, during the winter. He expected to return to the old home here and live with his son Charles, in the spring. For many years he has been a member, and a deacon, of the Congregational Church in Newton. He was always present at every meeting when it was possible to get there, and had great peace and satisfaction in his religious life. His health was very poor when he came to Iowa; and for many years he has lived with the expectation that his life would not be long. His wife died ten years ago, and since then he has often spoken of his loneliness and of his great desire to go "home." He was kindly cared for by his children, and has had a very comfortable old age. Aside from the two sons, Henry and Charles, there is a daughter, Mrs. W. G. Work, of Des Moines. A son and daughter are dead.

Mr. McFarland was born in Washington County, Penn., Feb. 16, 1816. When he was a small boy, the family moved to Knox County, Ohio. When he was about 27 years old he was married; and he and Mrs. McFarland lived together for 42 years. They moved to Jasper County, Iowa, in 1856. Both parents and children have been most worthy citizens. Nothing but feelings of kindness and respect follow after those who are gone; and those who remain have the sincere sympathy of all our people.

The Funeral services will be held at the Congregational Church, this (Wednesday) afternoon, at half-past two o'clock.
