OBITUARY. – Just as the bell struck for the last time for church services last Sabbath morning the spirit of Mrs. Debora Delacy Harrah took its flight from earth. Her last sickness was of only about a week’s duration, but for a long time her health has been failing and she has been subject to the infirmities of old age. She was born on the farm, purchased by her father from the government in 1803, and when the village of Hopedale, Harrison Co., Ohio, now stands, Oct. 14, 1810. She was married to W. N. Harrah, whose father had a farm near by, Nov. 25, 1830. Most of their 13 children, were born in Ohio, and 5 of them died there in early childhood, the victims of scarlet fever and croup. In 1853, the family moved to Davenport, in this state. In April 1855, they came to Newton, and after living one year in town they moved to a farm in the country. The family home for may years was the farm near the Old College Farm, 6 miles north of Newton, and which is now owned by the son, A. L. Harrah. Five sons and two daughters are now living. The marked feature of Mrs. Harrah’s life was her devotion to her family. She always made for them a comfortable and happy home. Her children believed in her and loved her, and from the time when the children were old enough to know and appreciate her devotion to them, it is believed that no one of them ever willfully disobeyed her. In August before her marriage, she made a public confession of faith in Christ, and she lived and died in that faith. If she had lived 5 days longer, she and her husband would have celebrated their sixty-third anniversary of their marriage. Mr. Harrah was 84 years old Oct. 26, last, and is in very good health. The funeral services took place at the home of her son, A. M. Harrah, and were conducted by Pres. Aylesworth. The body was laid to rest in the College Farm cemetery. All of the children were present at the funeral except W. D. Harrah, of Detroit, Mich., who was kept from coming by sickness. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1893.
