Died, at the family residence in Mound Prarie township, Monday, January 23, 1893, of Bright's disease, Samuel Gooden, aged 69 years, 3 months and 23 days. He was a member of the 8th Iowa Infantry and has resided in Jasper County since 1856. ~ The Newton Journal. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 1893.

Deceased leaves a wife and seven children-three boys and four girls. he has been a resident of this county since about 1856 and was a member of the 8th Iowa infantry reserve corps. He was born in Barron County, Kentucky, and was a member of the Methodist Church, South. The funeral services were conducted from the M. E. Church on Tuesday, Rev. Cozier officiating and the remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

In a roster of the Iowa Volunteer 8th Iowa Infantry Company D it reads "Gooden, Samuel A. Age 42. Nativity Kentucky. Enlisted Nov 24, 1864. Mustered Nov 24, 1864. Transferred to Vetern Reserve Corps June 30, 1866." According to the official discharge document, Samuel enlisted in the army during the Civil War on November 21, 1864 and was discharged November 14, 1865. His headstone indicates he served from 1861 to 1865 in Co. D of the Iowa Infantry.
