81st Birthday Is Celebrated
One Hundred Friends and Relatives Surprise Mrs. Francis Butin Near Galesburg
In honor of Mrs. Francis Butin ho was 81 years old on Saturday, August 18, a company of more than one hundred of her neighbors, friends and relatives went to her home near Galesburg to help her celebrate the event. Their coming was a complete surprise to Mrs. Butin and was greatly appreciated by her. The self-invited guests brought well filed baskets and tables were built under the bi shade trees for the big picnic dinner. Ice cream and cake were served after dinner.
Mrs. Butin was born in New York near Saratoga August 17, 1836. She came to Iowa with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Efnor, in 1854, locating in Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa. The same year she was married to Mr. Francis Butin, who entered the quarter section upon which the present old home is now located, and where she has lived for over 63 years. She is well preserved with health. Her three sons and two daughters were present for the day. Francis Butin and wife were charter members of the first M. E. church organized at Galesburg, and have always been active in all the work of the church.
A neat sum was given by the company to buy a present for Mother Butin. About four o’clock the crowd returned to their homes wishing Mrs. Butin many returns of the day.

Cating, Mrs. Bettie Fenner, Mrs. charley Sellman, Mrs. Grant Wheatcraft, Mrs. Ann Shelton, Mrs. A. D. Romans, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Longaker, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis F. Schultz, Mr. W. A. Wallerstead, Mr. and Mrs. James Ramer, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Terpstra, Mr. and Mrs. Watson Terpstra, Mr. and Mrs. William Ramer, Mr. and Mrs. E. C.
