Meets Lover in New York
Groom Crosses the Atlantic to Wed Bride on American Soil
No wonder Mrs. Emma Jones, the pretty dark-eyed little English woman, left Newton so bravely the first day of last month for her native home across the sea. She knew all the time, even tho her friends did not, that when she reached New York City her brother-in-law, Henry Jones, of Staffordshire, England, would meet her and that she would cross the Atlantic as his bride.
Her brother, George Shenton, and his family knew about the sister’s plans but few others did. Now they have received a letter from her which states that the wedding took place in a hotel in the city August 3rd. The Episcopalian marriage service was used and they were married by a Church of England clergyman.
They sailed immediately for England and are now nicely settled in the groom’s home at Staffordshire.
It will be remembered that Mr. and Mrs. Jones returned with her husband from a trip to their old English home a little over a year ago and that in a day or two after their return Mr. Jones was taken very sick and died in less than a week. It is his brother that Mrs. Jones married. He has several children but they are all grown and gone from the home.
Mr. Jones would have come to Iowa for his bride but he had only a two week’s vacation. He is interested in some school work and could be away no longer at this time. So he spent one week on the water coming for his bride and one week of the honeymoon trip was spent returning to their home.
Mrs. Jones is a beautiful little woman who has many friends in Newton and Jasper County where she has made her home for forty years.
