Hawkins family members killed in a car crash

Crash Kills 6; 4 from Jasper
A grinding accident, which occurred Saturday on rain-swept Iowa 141, a mile east of Moran in Dallas County, wiped out the lives of six Iowans, including four members of a Monroe family.
Five of the victims were killed outright and another, a 2-year old child, died early today in Blank Memorial Hospital in Des Moines.
Killed outright in the accident were Burton Hawkins, 25, Monroe, the driver of the automobile; his 19-year old sister, Jane Hawkins of Monroe; his daughter, Penny, 3; his brother-in-law, Robert Atwood, 23, of Perry; and Mr. Atwood’s 2-year old daughter, Angela.
Stephanie Hawkins, 2-year-old daughter of Hawkins, died today at Blank hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Hawkins, his sister and his two daughters will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Monroe.
Burial will be in Monroe Cemetery.
Garden Chapel Funeral Home, Monroe, is handling arrangements.
The Hawkins’ car, headed northwest on Iowa-141, skidded on wet pavement into the path of a pickup truck driven by William Kracht, 51, rural Peterson.
Kracht and his wife, Opal, 49, were listed in “good condition” Sunday at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines. Mr. Hawkins had gone to Perry to get his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Atwood, and their daughter, Angela to take them to Monroe for the 53rd birthday celebration for Jason Hawkins, father of Burton Hawkins, Sharon Hawkins and Mrs. Atwood.
The six had gone in the Burton Hawkins automobile to run errands in preparation for the party when the accident occurred.
The party was to have been held Saturday evening at the home of Jason Hawkins in Monroe.
Burton Hawkins’ wife, who is expecting a child in October, decided not to take the car ride.
Mr. Atwood’s wife, Sharon, saw pictures of the accident’s wreckage on television before she learned of it officially.
A relative quoted Mrs. Atwood as saying “that looks like their car but it can’t be: when she saw the film on television.
Mr. Hawkins, who was a part-time employee of the Monroe Farmers Cooperative while in high school, has worked for the firm for the past six years since his graduation from New Monroe high school.
The day before the accident he had been promoted to manager.
Services for Robert Duane Atwood, 23, and Angela Faye Atwood, 2, 704 S. 5th St., Perry, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Chapel.
The Rev. Warren McFate, minister of the United Methodist Church, Monroe, will officiate, and burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.
Mr. Atwood is survived by his widow, Sharon, three sisters, Miss Myrle Atwood and Mrs. Jeffery (Lorraine) Porter, both of Newton, and Mrs. Michael (Sharon) Dantoon, of New Hampton; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. John
Atwood of Newton; his grandmother, Mrs. Maude Smith of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and his great-grandmother, Mrs. Lilly E. Compton, of Davenport.
Mr. Atwood, an employee of the Newton Foundry for a number of years, was employed as a molder in a foundry headquartered in Des Moines.
He was born Aug. 22, 1946 in Newton and was educated in Newton schools.
He was married to Sharon Christine Hawkins March 18, 1965, at Omaha, Neb.
Mr. Atwood lived in Newton until moving to the Monroe and Prairie City area in 1966 and from there to Perry this year.
Angele Faye is survived by her mother, Mrs. Robert (Sharon Atwood; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jason Hawkins of Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. John Atwood of Newton; great-grandparents, Mrs. Maude Smith of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gifford of Kellogg; and a great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Lilly Compton of Davenport.
Six other persons were killed on Iowa highways over the weekend, and a Canton, S.D., man, Lowell Fossum, 38, who was injured when his car left a county road and plunged into a ditch near Renwick, Thursday, died in a Belmond hospital Friday.
Two young Navy men, Kimerick Alan Douds, 19, of rural Marshalltown, and Patrick M. Eygabroad, 19, of Marshalltown were killed in a head-on collision on a county road near Marshalltown Saturday.
John Michael Rigby, 49 of Pocahontas, was killed when the pickup truck he was driving overturned on US-169 about 6 miles south of Fort Dodge, Saturday.
Rebecca G. Weston, 16, of Ottumwa was killed early Sunday when a car driven by her husband left US-36 near Ottumwa and plunged into a ditch.
Also killed Sunday was Angela K. Best, 7 months old, who was a passenger in a car which went out of control on US-61 near Muscatine.
Delbert N. Redmond, 38, of Britt was killed in a two car collision in Britt Saturday.

Rites for 4 Monroe Crash Victims Slated Wednesday
Monroe – Services for Burton Riley Hawkins, 25, his two daughters, Penny Kay, 4, and Stephanie Day, 2, and his sister, Jane Hawkins, 19, all of Monroe, who were victims of a car-truck crash in Dallas County Saturday, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Monroe.
The Rev. Warren McFate, minister of the United Methodist Church; the Rev. John Porter, minister of the Presbyterian Church, and Elder Arthur Nichols of the Latter Day Saints Church, all of Monroe, will officiate. Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery, Monroe.
Prayer services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Monroe Garden Chapel.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his widow, Sharon. He and his sister Jane Annette Hawkins are also survived by a brother, Jackie of Fort Lewis, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Robert Atwood of Perry; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jason Hawkins of Monroe and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gifford of Kellogg.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hawkins, and a sister, Rosalie, in infancy.
Mr. Hawkins was a member of the Monroe Jaycees.
He had been employed by the Farmers Co-op Elevator, Monroe, for 6 years.
The son of Jason and Agnes Gifford Hawkins, he was born May 14, 1944, at Newton and was a 1963 graduate of new Monroe High School.
He was married to Sharon Fales Aug. 14, 1964, at Monroe.
Penny Kay was born July 15, 1965, in Des Moines, and Stephanie Day was born July 29, 1967 in Knoxville.
Jane Annette Hawkins was born April 23, 1950, at Monroe, and attended New Monroe high school.
Also killed in the accident were Robert Atwood, 23, of Perry and Mr. Atwood’s 2-year old daughter, Angela, who were passengers in the car driven by Mr. Hawkins.
