Deeter Cemetery
(Copied from the book “As It Was Written”, page 67
Three miles east of Highway 65 on the Jasper-Story County line, and east of Earl Dodd’s, lies what remains of an old graveyard, known as the Deeter Cemetery.
Outside a fence, on an embankment, are five marked graves, but little is known of others existing years ago, before the road was changed.
The five markers indicate the graves of
1. Andrew Deeter, died in 1859
2. Mary, his wife, age 86 years (
3. Infant daughter of S. C. & S. E. Deeter, died Dec. 28, 1870
4. Danna, son of S. C & S. E. Deeter, died Dec. 5, 1882 age 1 year & 6 months
5. Cornelius Runyan, died in 1888
Considered to be an abandoned cemetery, but identified with the history of our early settlers, it causes us to wonder about the lives of the Deeter family and the part they played in the settlement of Iowa.
(Notice the slight differences in the Deeter Cemetery records)
