Mrs. J. R. Zollinger’s Ninetieth Birthday
A Score of More of Her Old-Time Friends Spend Pleasant Afternoon with Aged Mother
(From The Newton Record)
Last Sunday, May 16th, Mrs. E. M. Zollinger, widow of the late Lieut. Jerry R. Zollinger, rounded out her ninetieth birthday and in order to celebrate the important event, a score or more of her friends assembled at her beautiful home on East 4th Street North, on Saturday afternoon, and from 3 o’clock until 5, there were congratulations and a delightful season of reminiscences such as only a company of old friends and neighbors like this could enjoy. The affair was planned and carried out by Mrs. Henry M. Vaughan, a dear neighbor and friend – “a very present friend in time of need.”
An elegant luncheon was served by Mrs. Vaughan, being assisted by Mrs. Hamilton Parvin and Miss Florence Vaughan. The white birthday cake was in evidence with its 10 lighted candles – one for every 9 years of her life. Mrs. Zollinger was told that her future years depended upon the number of candles she “blew out” at one breath, and eight of them were “out” in an instant, which caused a good deal of merriment, and by this taken we may expect her to remain with us for eight more years. Mrs. Zollinger related many beautiful reminiscences of her life – among them incidents of her trip to Europe a few years ago, in company with her talented daughter, the late Miss Gulielma Zollinger. And while there their visit to the grave of Bret Hart. By the way, she knew Hart when they were both “young folks” and on Saturday recited to her friends from memory a little poem that Bret had written and presented to her when she was a girl.
Mrs. Zollinger has lived in Newton for a little over 63 years, and on the 10th of this month passed the 67th anniversary of her marriage. Her husband was a gallant officer in the Civil war, and he and their two children, Gulielma and Ed. M. have been dead for many years. Mrs. Z. has been an invalid for a long while but with an ample competence, a beautiful home and good friends, she has certainly been blessed.
Following were Mrs. Zollinger’s birthday guests: Mrs. John P. Ramer, Mrs. Anne McFarland, Mrs. George B. Hunter, Mrs. Mary Lyday, Mrs. U. Sloanaker, Mrs. J. R. Gorrell, Mrs. Thomas Killduff, Mrs. John Clarkson, Mrs. David Van Gieson, Mrs. Arthur Lufkin, Mrs. Carrie McCord, Mrs. Judson Fugard, Mrs. Ernest Finch, Mrs. Margaret Gates, Mrs. Mary Miller, Mrs. Hamilton Parvin, Mrs. D. J. Eberhart, Mrs. J. F. Lister and Mrs. John Vaughan.
