Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Smith Have Six Sons Eligible for Service; Three Are Now Taken
If every family in the United States had as many sons to give to their country as have Mr. and Mrs. Hugh E. Smith, residing northwest of the city, there certainly would be no trouble in defeating the Kaiser.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith are the parents of ten children, four daughters and six sons. All of the sons are of draft age and three of them are at the present time either in France or in training camps in this country. Of the other three, two are in class one with the probability of being called any time, and the other, now in class two, is thought will soon be moved to class one.
Leo is somewhere in France; Hugh is at Camp Dodge; Vernon is at Camp Cody, Deming, N. M.; John and William are both employed on farms in the county and are in class one; Charles is employed on the J. C. Morrisey farm and is in class two. Not one of these six boys is married.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family reside about nine miles northwest of this city, where he is employed on the farm of H. D. Parsons.
Two of the daughters, Irene and Susan are at home; Mrs. Ling Carstevens lives near Baxter and Mrs. Roy Schermerhorn resides in Newton.
