Mr. and Mrs. Peter DeReus Celebrate Golden Wedding
Valeria Couple Enjoy Golden Wedding With Family and Friends
Mr. and Mrs. Peter DeReus of Valeria celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, although the occasion was not until Monday, November 21st.
Mr. and Mrs. DeReus are well known in this section, having lived around here most of their lives. Mrs. DeReus was Ella Poulson before her marriage. Her old home was where F. J. Garwood now lives. Mr. DeReus farmed until about 21 years ago, when they moved to Valeria, where he engaged in the hardware business. He was Mayor of Valeria for ten years.
Their children were all present for the occasion except Roy, who is wintering in Florida. They celebrated with a basket dinner which was served cafeteria. Several large cakes decorated the table. The oldest grandchild, Velma Emery baked the huge gold wedding cake which was decorated with a wedding bell and bride and groom. Dinner was served to forty nine. They have seven children, twenty-four grandchildren and two great grand-children.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Claude DeReus of Valeria, Mr. and Mrs. Ray DeReus and family of Runnells, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Emery and family of Colfax, Mrs. Ray Thomas and six children of Farrar, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ruggless and son of Prairie City, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Riley and family of Newton, George Wall of Colfax, George Poulson of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Sally Shissler of Colfax, Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeReus and son Hubert of Prairie City, Mr. and Mrs. Arie DeReus of Newton, Mrs. Mattie Trapp and two sons of Newton, Mrs. Dota Poulson, Mrs. Reeta Dodd and daughter of Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Gearhart and family of Valeria.
Callers in the afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vriezelaar and family of Otley, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Vriezelaar and daughter Ruth of Pella, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Vriezelaar and son of Pella, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Vriezelaar of Otley, Mr. and Mrs. Graddus Vriezelaar and Mattie and Raymond of Otley, Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Adams of Mingo, and Mr. and Mrs. Van Nostrand of Newton.
They received many nice gifts, one of which was the installation of electric lights by the children and a radio by the grandchildren. (NOTE: the was a photo of the couple in the paper)
