Jasper County Couple Married Fifty Years
Mr. and Mrs. John Wheatcraft Observe Golden Anniversary Today
REASNOR – Mr. and Mrs. John Wheatcraft are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today with a family gathering and open house at their farm home north of Colfax.
A potluck dinner was served at noon featuring a three-tier wedding cake baked and decorated by their daughter, Mrs. Earl Gearhart of Reasnor. The cake was surmounted by miniature bride and groom placed under an arch from which a tiny gold bell was suspended.
For the occasion, the home was elaborately decorated in purple and gold by Mrs. Gearhart and Mrs. Earl Wheatcraft, a daughter-in-law.
All of the close relatives were present for the affair, with the exception of a grandson, John William Wheatcraft, who is stationed in the U. S. Navy at Norfolk, Va.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Wheatcraft were born 71 years ago on farms southeast of Newton. Mr. Wheatcraft’s parents were Hamilton and Margaret Wheatcraft and his wife was the daughter of Johnathan and Mary Listen.
The wedding of Eliza Listen and John Wheatcraft was solemnized May 22, 1887, and a few months later the couple began housekeeping on the Swihart farm, four miles northeast of newton.
Six years later they moved to the Hough farm southeast of Newton where they remained two years, and then located on their own farm four miles north of Colfax.
Twenty-three years ago they built a new house on the farm and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wheatcraft, now occupy the original farm home.
Mr. and Mrs. Wheatcraft have two children, Earl of Colfax and Mrs. Earl Gearhart of Reasnor; four grandchildren, William Wheatcraft of Norfolk, Va., Wayne Wheatcraft of Colfax and Francis Gearhart and Mrs. Bessie Wheeler of Newton, and three great grandchildren, Betty Wheeler and Vivian and Lenley Gearhart of Newton. One grandson, Marlo Gearhart died 18 years ago.
