Old Sale Notice Is Prized Relic of Newton Man’s Family
Ray Carter of Rt. 5, Newton, has a carefully preserved newspaper clipping which dates back to 1850.
The item refers to a sale held by Carter’s uncle in Kentucky, as he prepared to move to Missouri.
Joe Cooley, the uncle, subsequently married Carter’s mother’s sister. Carter’s mother’s name was Emma Slagle.
The text of the clipping follows: “Having sold my farm intending to move to Missouri, I will sell at public sale one mile west and four miles south of Harrisburg, Ky. on Saturday, September 26, 1850, the following described property, to wit: One buck negro, 25 years old, weight 210 pounds, four negro wenches, 18 to 24 years old; three negro boys six years old; 13 nebro hoes; one pine sled; six yokes of oxen, well broke; 10 ox yokes with hickory bows; two ox carts with six inch tires; one saddle, three double shovel plows; 25 one gallon whisky jugs; 100 gallons of apple cider; one barrel of good sorghum; two barrels of soap; two barrels of kraut; one extra good negro whip; two tons of tobacco, two years old. Sale will start at 10.
“Terms cash: I need the money.
“Colonel H. W. Johnson, Auctioneer, Bill Crawford, clerk.
“Joe Cooley, owner”
That period of American history often seems so far away, but it was only one generation in this case.
