Newton has New Clothing Firm Hanke & Scharf

The Men’s Fashion Shop owned by E. L. Hoxel & Co. has been sold to Lee Hanke and Phil Scharf.

The deal was made some time ago with the understanding that possession was not to be given until June or July. The invoice was finished Saturday and the transfer made.

The members of the new firm are both well and favorably known in Newton and Jasper County, having lived here all their lives. Both have an extended acquaintance with the buying public.

Lee Hanke, after finishing school here, was a clothing salesman for four or five years so that he knows about what people want in the clothing business and made for himself the reputation of being a careful and at the same time, fast salesman.

Phil Scharf was in the hardware business on the north side of the square for about twenty years. He was an efficient county treasurer for one term having been elected on the democratic ticket. He is a prominent Odd Fellow and everybody knows him.

Both are popular young men and with their large circle of friends and acquaintances are such to get a generous share of the clothing business.

Many changes are contemplated in the store including the enlargement of the space to the full length of the room so that a full line of men's, boys’ and children’s clothing and furnishings of a high grade may be put in. These changes will be made soon so that everything will be in readiness for the new fall stock when it arrives. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, June 7, 1911.
